We thank God for the generous giving of members of St. James and others to the work of our Church. Our primary aim as a Church is “to win people for Christ and build them up in Christ” which we do out of obedience to Christ and love for others.
“Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9.7).
Sustaining this work, including maintaining the Church buildings and a full-time ministry, costs money and we realise that this can be a sensitive issue and the amount that each individual gives is a private matter between them and God. The bible commends the practice of tithing (Malachi 3.10) (that is giving away at least a tenth of your net income). The Church of England suggests that a half of this – 5% of your net income – be given to the church. A simple method of calculating (roughly) how much this should be for you is to work on £1 a week for each £1000 of your net annual income, so if your net annual income is £5000 then £5 a week is your target. £20,000 a year is £20 a week and so on. Those who follow this principle discover that it a great blessing not only to those who receive but to those who give.
Taxpayers can boost the amount they give, with no cost to themselves, either by signing a Gift Aid declaration and using Weekly Offering envelopes or by completing the details on the front of the Gift Aid envelopes which are in each pew, and putting their collection into those envelopes each week. If you need help the parish treasurer will show you how this works. These Gift Aid envelopes can also be used for one off gifts or donations. By using this method of giving the church can reclaim the basic rate tax you have paid on your donation – a boost of 25% to the amount you give. This comes to several thousand pounds each year; a very welcome addition to our income, and all for nothing!
Here’s another way of giving for free:-
Many of us buy many items on-line and over 3500 on-line retailers are members of the “Give as you Live” scheme. Here’s how it works:-
First – sign up to Give As You Live Click “Join Now” then install the shopping bar (top right). You are now ready to go.
You now have two options. Let’s say you want to purchase something from Amazon. Log onto Amazon and choose your purchase. Click on the toolbar that you want to use GAYL, then complete your purchase OR sign in at give as you live and type in the article / supplier you are looking for, then complete your purchase.
You will then be told how much you have raised. Just think – when you book holidays, train tickets or buy on-line at Amazon, E-bay, Asda, Tesco or countless other retailers the supplier will give us a donation – and it doesn’t cost you a penny!
